The Media Network Action on Climate Change has commended Government for its swift response to the recent partial collapse of a tailings dam in Kitwe, which discharged mining waste into the Chibuluma Stream.
Organisation Executive Coordinator Kennedy Phiri welcomed the directive requiring the responsible company to present itself and take full accountability for the damage caused.
In a statement issued to ZNBC News in Lusaka, Mr. Phiri noted that the incident has negatively affected aquatic life, crops, and the surrounding ecosystem.
He urged Government to conduct a comprehensive audit of all tailings dams across the country to prevent similar disasters in the future.
Mr. Phiri also called for stronger regulations through enhanced oversight and enforcement within the mining sector. He emphasized that affected communities must be adequately compensated, supported, and protected to ensure their wellbeing.
