NALUMANGO Calls for Action on Mental Health

By Honester Mshoka

Vice-President MUTALE NALUMANGO says the government recognises mental health and substance abuse as major public health concerns requiring a coordinated national response.

Mrs. NALUMANGO says punitive measures alone are inadequate, stating that long-term solutions must combine accountability with rehabilitation, reintegration and the restoration of dignity.

She says progress depends on joint efforts among citizens, professionals, faith-based organisations and cooperating partners.

And Mrs. NALUMANGO has urged young people to channel their talent and energy productively, warning that opportunity without discipline and responsibility yields little benefit.

She was speaking in Lusaka during the launch of two books authored by Evangelist BRIAN CHISHIMBA.

Mrs. NALUMANGO said Evangelist CHISHIMBA’s personal recovery story has contributed to public awareness and education on substance abuse and mental health.

Meanwhile, Health Minister ALEX KATAKWE said Zambia has recorded progress in strengthening awareness, prevention and treatment of substance use disorders.

Dr. KATAKWE said the gains are linked to continued training of healthcare workers under the Zambia National Mental Health Training Package.

And Evangelist CHISHIMBA called on the government and institutions to expand support for people struggling with addiction through rehabilitation programmes.

He said such measures could help reduce stigma and support recovery and reintegration into society.
