Trade expert GILBERT NKAMBA says the revival of Mulungushi Textiles marks a significant step towards industrialisation, moving Zambia away from simply exporting raw materials and towards value addition.
Mr. NKAMBA explains that for many years, Zambia has been exporting cotton in its raw form, which has brought in limited returns.
He points out that the reopening of the plant offers an opportunity to process cotton locally, thereby increasing its economic value.
Mr. NKAMBA has emphasised that industrialisation is essential if Zambia is to fully benefit from regional trade opportunities within blocs like the Southern African Development Community –SADC- and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa -COMESA.
He notes that while the SADC and COMESA markets offer considerable potential, substantial benefits will only be realised when the country exports finished products, rather than raw materials.
Speaking to ZNBC News in Lusaka, Mr. NKAMBA also described the location of Mulungushi Textiles as highly strategic, situated along the Lusaka-Ndola dual carriageway and within key regional trade corridors.
In response to the plant’s reopening, local fashion designers and tailors have expressed their support, noting that the move will help reduce fabric costs.
Tailors PHYLLIS MIYAMBO and JONATHAN MUSONDA explained that much of the fabric used locally is imported, and supply is often inconsistent.
Other local designers, including SHADREK HANDSEN, also praised President HICHILEMA for reopening the textile factory, viewing it as a positive step for the local fashion and textile industry.
