By Alice Lubasi
Government has awarded unionized employees in local authorities a salary increment of 710 Kwacha across the board.
The increment follows negotiations between Government and Local Government Unions for improved salaries and conditions of service.
The parties also agreed to increase the rate of transport allowance by 30 percent for workers living with disabilities.
Local Government Permanent Secretary for Technical Services Nicholas Phiri said local authorities are the engines of development, hence the need to motivate them. He made the remarks during the signing of the collective agreement for the 2026 conditions of service for unionized employees in Lusaka today.
Meanwhile, Local Government Service Commission Chairperson Luxon Kazabu explained that the delay in signing the agreement was due to circumstances beyond control.
Zambia United Local Authorities and Allied Workers Union (ZULAAWU) President Emmanuel Mwinsa welcomed the increment, saying it will go a long way in assisting workers.
