Global mining giant BHP has expressed interest in large-scale copper exploration in Zambia, signaling growing confidence in the country’s mining sector.
Speaking during a meeting in Lusaka, BHP Head of Global Generative Exploration Campbell McCuaig said the company is targeting large copper deposits that are difficult to detect using traditional methods, noting that many are buried deep underground or hidden beneath geological cover.
Mr. McCuaig said BHP is deploying advanced geological techniques and data analysis to identify mineral systems responsible for major copper deposits.
Meanwhile, Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development Permanent Secretary Hapenga Kabeta said the collaboration with BHP will help increase copper production and attract major investors.
Dr. Kabeta said that government remains committed to supporting responsible investment in the mining sector.
