Information and Media Minister CORNELIUS MWEETWA has cautioned the media against unethical conduct as the country heads towards the August 13 general election.

Speaking during this year’s World Press Freedom Day in Lusaka, Mr. MWEETWA said the credibility of the general election will, among other factors, depend on the conduct of journalists.
He said the media must rise above bias, misinformation and political manipulation, noting that journalists have a duty to uphold truth, professionalism and democratic integrity.
Mr. MWEETWA warned that misinformation networks and what he described as enemies of progress are mobilising to influence the public with falsehoods.

He challenged journalists to counter such efforts with verified facts, ethical reporting and accountability, particularly as political tensions rise.
The Minister said although Zambia has in recent years expanded democratic space and restored order, these gains risk being undermined by sections of the media through unverified reporting and sensational broadcasting.
Meanwhile, Information and Media Permanent Secretary THABO KAWANA commended Mr. MWEETWA for his role in the enactment of the Access to Information Law.
Mr. KAWANA also praised the Minister for pushing for amendments to the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation –ZNBC- and Independent Broadcasting Authority –IBA- Acts.
Speaking at the same event, Zambia National Commission for UNESCO Senior Programme Officer MOIRA NG’UNI said press freedom remains vital for democracy, inclusive societies and the protection of human rights.

Ms. NG’UNI said a free, independent and pluralistic media is essential for an informed society, but noted that the rapid growth of artificial intelligence and digital tools is raising new ethical questions for journalism.
And Media Institute of Southern Africa –MISA- Zambia Chairperson LORRAINE CHISANGA urged the media to contribute to sustaining peace and building a country where journalists can operate freely.
Meanwhile, Media Liaison Committee Chairperson HENRY KABWE thanked government for the enactment of the Access to Information Act and the decriminalisation of defamation of the President.
