Vice President MUTALE NALUMANGO says Government is working to address challenges faced by nurses, including heavy workloads and limited resources.
Mrs. NALUMANGO says Government remains committed to providing safe working conditions and adequate equipment for nurses and midwives.
She has called for a resilient nursing workforce to support the National Health Transformation Agenda.
The Vice President said this in a speech read on her behalf by Health Minister ALEX KATAKWE during the commemoration of International Nurses Day in Lusaka today.
Mrs. NALUMANGO said there is need for a culture of dialogue and partnership between Government and nurses instead of confrontation.
And Zambia Union of Nurses and Midwives Organisation -ZUNMO- President FRAY MICHELO commended Government for the continued recruitment of nurses and midwives into the public sector, saying the move has helped ease administrative burdens.
Mr. MICHELO called for predictable employment and improved conditions of service for nurses and midwives.
He said volunteerism is only a temporary measure and should not become a long-term substitute for formal employment.
