The Drug Enforcement Commission –DEC- and Zambia Police have arrested 36 suspects for alleged drug trafficking during the Jah Night Musical Concert in Chongwe District.
The suspects were arrested during a joint operation conducted at the One Love Reggae Festival held at Mika Convention Centre in the Silverest area.
According to a statement issued by DEC Deputy Public Relations Officer THERESA MAWERE, the suspects were found with more than four kilogrammes of high-grade cannabis and other illicit drugs, contrary to Section 15 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act No. 35 of 2021.
Ms. MAWERE said officers also seized cannabis concealed in prepacks and sachets.
She added that baked food products, including scones and cakes allegedly laced with high-grade cannabis, were recovered during the operation.
Several bottles of Benylin with Codeine, a controlled medicine commonly abused for recreational purposes, were also confiscated.
The Commission has warned against turning public entertainment events into platforms for drug trafficking and abuse, saying such activities pose serious threats to public health, safety and national security, especially among young people.
DEC further said operations targeting drug-related crimes would continue across the country.
