The National Health Insurance Management Authority –NHIMA- says membership of the national health insurance scheme has grown to more than six million.
NHIMA Director General MICHAEL NJAPAU says the increase has been driven by growing enrolment from both the formal and informal sectors.
Dr. NJAPAU says the rise in membership reflects increasing public confidence in the national health insurance scheme.
He was speaking in a pre-recorded message during the opening of a media workshop for journalists and editors from North-Western and Copperbelt provinces.
Dr. NJAPAU disclosed that NHIMA processes more than 250,000 claims from health institutions across the country every month.
He said the scheme is also supporting more than 1,000 patients undergoing dialysis, with each patient requiring treatment costing at least K42,000 per month.
Dr. NJAPAU stated that NHIMA continues to provide cover for senior citizens aged 65 and above, many of whom require treatment for chronic conditions such as hypertension and cancer.
