Zambia says it remains committed to United Nations peacekeeping efforts and supports measures aimed at strengthening the role of UN Police in promoting global peace and security.
Deputy Inspector General of Police for Administration CHARITY MUNGANGA says the country supports a future-focused United Nations Police framework that promotes international peace, security and the rule of law.
Ms. MUNGANGA was speaking when she delivered Zambia’s statement at the Fifth United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit -UNCOPS 2026- in New York.
She said there is need to increase the participation of women in peacekeeping operations, including in leadership positions.
Ms. MUNGANGA stated that well-equipped mixed-gender police units are essential for maintaining public order and responding to high-risk situations.
She said efforts to improve financial efficiency under the UN80 initiative should channel more resources towards training, technology and operational readiness without weakening peacekeeping mandates.
Ms. MUNGANGA said United Nations Police continue to play an important role in protecting civilians and supporting the development of accountable policing institutions.
The Deputy Inspector General of Police joined ministers, police chiefs and senior representatives of regional and professional policing organisations to discuss ways of strengthening international peace, security and development through national and United Nations policing.
The summit also considered measures to strengthen the United Nations Police Division’s role as the system-wide focal point for policing and law enforcement, while improving the performance and capacity of UN Police.
The two-day summit was held in New York from 7 to 8 July 2026.
