The Great Lakes Region Elections Observer Mission to Zambia says it is optimistic that the August 13, General Election will uphold democratic principles shared by member states.
Head of Mission MOKGWEETSI MASISI says the mission will conduct its work independently and impartially.
Mr. MASISI, who is former President of Botswana, said this in Lusaka today when he paid a courtesy call on President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA at State House.
He said the mission will engage various electoral stakeholders before providing feedback and presenting a report on its observations.
Mr. MASISI said election observation is important in supporting democracy in Zambia, the region and the continent.
He also wished President HICHILEMA and other candidates taking part in the election well.
And President HICHILEMA said Zambia will work closely with the Great Lakes Region Elections Observer Mission and provide the necessary support for its work.
President HICHILEMA assured the mission that the election will be free and fair.
He said the Electoral Commission of Zambia –ECZ- has undertaken extensive preparations for the election, including voter sensitisation on constitutional amendments.
President HICHILEMA said the ECZ faced an additional responsibility following the increase in the number of constituencies from 156 to 226, but had the Government’s full support.
He said the campaign period has been largely peaceful, apart from a few sporadic incidents.
President HICHILEMA expressed confidence that the observer mission will conduct an independent and objective assessment of the election and compare its findings with the 2021 General Election.
