Former Information and Media Minister Cornelius Mweetwa of the UPND has been declared winner of the Choma Central Constituency parliamentary seat, after polling 18,495 votes.
Mr. Mweetwa defeated his closest rival, Independent candidate Baker Chakwana, who received 14,803 votes, while another independent, Rodwell Nzoolo, managed 349 votes.
Returning Officer Rebecca Kalumba declared Mr. Mweetwa duly elected at about 13:40 hours.
The result means the UPND has won all three parliamentary seats in Choma District.
Speaking after his victory, Mr. Mweetwa thanked his campaign team and acknowledged Mr. Chakwana for mounting what he described as a vigorous campaign. He urged residents to put the election behind them and reunite, calling on his supporters to avoid recrimination, retribution, and finger‑pointing.
Mr. Mweetwa emphasized that peace and unity must prevail regardless of political differences, thanking voters who supported him and President Hakainde Hichilema, while appealing to those who voted against him to accept the outcome.
