The United Party for National Development (UPND) has swept Lufwanyama East and West parliamentary seats as well as the council chairperson position, securing a landslide victory in the district.
In Lufwanyama East, Elisha Matambo polled 11,169 votes, defeating Annie Munshya of the NRPUP who managed 2,093 votes. Moses Chiyuka of the Socialist Party came third with 483 votes.
Returning Officer Terry Siyumbano declared Mr. Matambo duly elected. In his victory message, Mr. Matambo pledged to improve the road network and address water challenges so residents no longer travel long distances to access the commodity.
In Lufwanyama West, Kenny Siachisumo won with 4,571 votes, beating Independent Edward Kapandula who polled 3,131 votes, and Independent Kamwanga Samalesu with 2,648 votes. Christopher Kalenge of the Socialist Party secured 325 votes, while Henry Chilombo of Citizens First got 143 votes.
Returning Officer Sylvester Mukanda declared Mr. Siachisumo winner at the Lufwanyama Civic Centre at 11:45 hours. Out of 11,136 ballots cast, 348 were rejected. The constituency has 23,919 registered voters.
Meanwhile, the UPND also won the council chairperson seat, with Annie Kapandula polling 11,020 votes. She defeated Independent Gilbert Solochi who received 6,559 votes, NRPUP’s Mwila Kangwa with 3,748 votes, and Independent Kennedy Kazeza with 2,763 votes. Dorian Shamfuti of the Socialist Party trailed with 422 votes.
