Seven candidates have successfully filed their nominations for the Petauke Central Constituency Parliamentary by-election.
The candidates are JOSHUA TEMBO of the Leadership Movement, MOSES PHIRI of the Democratic Union, JULIUS MWALE of the Socialist Party, CARLOS CHAMA of Citizens First, and SIMON BANDA of the New Congress Party.
Others include Independent candidate NKOLE MUTALE and SEVERIAN LUNGU of the UPND.
However, the first candidate scheduled to file his nomination, MUTALE KATONGO, an Independent, failed to do so after reportedly falling ill. His agent, PETER NYANJE, informed journalists that Mr. KATONGO’s nomination could not be accepted as he needed to present a soft copy of his photograph and a letter confirming his candidature.
Meanwhile, JOSHUA TEMBO of the Leadership Movement expressed confidence in winning the seat, pledging to develop all rural parts of the Petauke constituency.
MOSES PHIRI of the Democratic Union promised to construct a dam in Petauke to address ongoing water challenges.
JULIUS MWALE of the Socialist Party stated that his priority would be bridging the gap between the rich and the poor if elected.
CARLOS CHAMA of Citizens First declared himself the “surprise package” for Petauke, predicting a landslide victory.
SIMON BANDA of the New Congress Party tailored his campaign message to focus on resolving water challenges and improving the poor road network in the constituency.
Independent candidate NKOLE MUTALE, drawing inspiration from the incumbent Petauke MP, expressed confidence in his popularity within the constituency and his chances of winning.
Lastly, SEVERIAN LUNGU of the ruling UPND promised to work toward uniting the people of Petauke, highlighting the divisions the area has experienced in recent times.
The Petauke Central Constituency Parliamentary by-election is scheduled to take place on February 6, 2025.
