VEEP looks to schools for disaster risk reduction

Vice President MUTALE NALUMANGO has tasked the Ministry of Education to inculcate and promote a culture of disaster prevention.
Mrs. NALUMANGO has also urged the Ministry of Education to empower young people so that they understand and act on the risks they face.
She says the Ministry should develop a comprehensive school safety framework to protect children and their learning environment from all risks and hazards in the education sector.
Mrs. NALUMANGO was speaking when she officiated at the International day for disaster risk reduction in Lusaka.
Meanwhile, United Nations –UN- Resident Coordinator BEATRICE MUTALI said there is need to integrate disaster risk reduction in the way stakeholders develop plans and budgets at all levels.
In a speech read on her behalf by United Nations Development Programme -UNDP Representative JAMES WAKIAGA, Mrs. MUTALI said the UN commits to supporting government plans that are directed towards preventing new risks.
