ZRA funds 70 % of Budget
By Angela Limwanya
The Zambia Revenue Authority -ZRA- says its contribution towards the National Budget has increased from 49.6 percent in 2021 to 70.5 percent in 2024.
ZRA further says it expects its contribution to increase to 71.5 percent in 2025.
ZRA Commissioner General DINGANI BANDA says this is testament of the government’s increasing dependency on domestic revenue mobilization, rather than on borrowing.
Mr. BANDA said at the tax sensitisation workshop for Members of Parliament in Livingstone today that through tax collection and administration, the authority ensures it mobilizes the necessary domestic resources to fund public services and national budgets.
He said through the collected resources, the government has been able to increase the Constituency Development Fund CDF which is improving the lives of citizens through projects such as schools in rural areas.
The Commissioner General says it is important that stakeholders such as the Members of Parliament have knowledge on taxation to influence the general citizenry to uphold voluntary tax compliance as well as ensure that the tax system is fair, efficient, and effective.
Speaking at the same event, Clerk of the National Assembly, ROY NGULUBE said it is important that MPs have the knowledge on taxes because they play a key role in exercising oversight over tax and non-tax revenue generation, and general fiscal policy.
Mr. NGULUBE says enhancing collections of the various taxes is one of the surest ways of avoiding huge fiscal deficits and unsustainable public debt through prudent utilisation of public resources.
