Agriculture Minister Reuben Mtolo has reassured the people of North-Western Province that the government will rehabilitate and construct more dams in the region.
Mr. Mtolo stated that this initiative is driven by the province’s agricultural potential and its capacity to become the nation’s food basket.
Speaking during the commissioning of the Kantenda Dam in Kasempa District, North-Western Province, the minister highlighted that six out of eight rehabilitated dams in Southern, Western, and North-Western Provinces have already been commissioned.
Mr. Mtolo emphasized that the rehabilitation of dams aligns with the government’s goal of ensuring farmers can grow crops year-round through water harvesting. The dams will support various agricultural activities.
At the same event, World Bank Senior Agriculture Specialist Silvia Mauri revealed that over 14 million United States dollars has been allocated for the rehabilitation of the eight dams.
This investment is part of the 168-million-dollar Irrigation Development Support Project.
