“The Dec.17 power disturbance came from outside Zambia”
By Macpherson Mukuka
ZESCO says the power system disturbance that occurred on December 17, 2024, affected parts of the Southern African Power Pool interconnected network.
The corporation has revealed that preliminary investigations indicate the disturbance originated outside Zambia, although further investigations are still ongoing.
In response to the incident, ZESCO’s inbuilt automatic response mechanisms successfully prevented a total collapse of the network, minimizing the impact on internal power flows.
ZESCO has disclosed that only a few loads were temporarily lost during the disturbance.
In a statement to ZNBC News, the corporation has stated that the aftermath of the incident has constrained power import inflows into the country.
ZESCO says, as a result, it has implemented emergency load management measures, which have affected the national power supply schedule.
This is according to a statement issued by ZESCO Corporate Affairs Department.
