Zaloumis Calls on Petauke Youths to Avoid Electoral Violence
By Joy Nyambe
Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) Chairperson, Mwangala Zaloumis, has urged young people in Petauke not to allow anyone to misinform or disinform them about the electoral process.
Ms. Zaloumis says youths should also help demystify the notion that people are being registered to vote in the February 6 Parliamentary by-election in the area.
She clarified that those who register after the certification of the voters’ register cannot vote, except for those replacing their defaced, damaged, or lost voters’ cards.
Ms. Zaloumis says young people are at an advantage of being knowledgeable about the electoral process as they are exposed to information via various media platforms, including social media.
Ms. Zaloumis also appealed to the youths in Petauke to avoid the temptation of being used as tools of violence by political parties in the upcoming Parliamentary by-election.
She urged young people to exercise maximum restraint against acts of violence and misconduct, which could lead to chaos in the area.
Ms. Zaloumis made these remarks when she opened a youth conference in Petauke today, organized by the ECZ in view of the forthcoming by-election in the area.
