By Ruth Chayinda
Vice President MUTALE NALUMANGO has directed the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit –DMMU- to expedite the process of availing cleaning chemicals to markets and bus stations in Lusaka.
Mrs. NALUMANGO says with cleaning chemicals, the public facilities will be kept clean and prevent spread of cholera.
She says it is important for Government to prioritise resources to ensure that markets and their surrounding areas are kept clean and safe from any waterborne diseases.
The vice President notes that it is the UPND’s determination and commitment to ensure markets and Marketeers are well looked after and operate in a clean environment.
She has stressed that this is why President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA guided that some resources from the Constituency Development Fund –CDF- be used to ensure that markets are clean and have access to proper sanitation.
Speaking before the launch of the cleaning exercise at Lusaka’s BH market, Mrs. NALUMANGO also assured marketeers that Government has continued providing support to traders.
And Lusaka Province Minister SHEAL MULYATA said the launch of the cleaning exercise in 12 markets in Lusaka will help prevent cholera and improve cleanliness.
Ms. MULYATA said it is encouraging that with the onset of the rainy season, Lusaka District has not recorded any cholera case and stressed that the status quo should be maintained.
Meanwhile, Kanyama Member of Parliament MONTY CHINKULI said the cleaning initiative will help the marketeers operate in a clean environment.
