Zambia’s Corruption Perception Index Improves
By Ruth Chayinda
Zambia’s Corruption Perception Index has improved by two points from 37 in 2023 to 39 in 2024.
This means the level of public sector corruption in Zambia has reduced in 2024 compared to 2023.
Transparency International Zambia Advocacy, Policy, and Research Manager, Bright Chizonde, however, says despite the improvement, the country is still below the global average score of 43.
Mr. Chizonde says this shows that more needs to be done.
TIZ Chapter President, Priscilla Chansa, has recommended accelerating efforts in combating public sector corruption to ensure continued improvements in Zambia’s CPI score.
Ms. Chansa also called on the government to finalize the guidelines and rules for the Access to Information Act to promote transparency, accountability, and effective scrutiny by the media and other stakeholders.
Meanwhile, Justice Permanent Secretary Isabelle Lemba said the CPI results are encouraging as they show the government’s determination to root out corruption in the public sector.
She said that though the progress may be viewed as a slight increase, it shows that the government has put in place measures to win the fight against corruption.
ACC Acting Director General, Monica Mwansa, says it is encouraging that the several strides and reforms taken have led to the leap in the CPI score from 33 to 39 in 2024.
Ms. Mwansa says this indicates that the country has taken concrete steps to enhance transparency, enforce anti-corruption measures, and strengthen governance institutions.
Zambia Parliamentary Caucus on Environment and Climate Change Chairperson, Twaambo Mutinta, called for enhanced mechanisms to combat corruption in climate change financing.
