By Teverai Dzeka
First Quantum Minerals -FQM- has empowered 8 families with houses and farm land as compensation following closure of its Bwana Mkubwa Mine in Ndola.
The families have also been resettled, under the Bwana Mkubwa resettlement project in Ndola.
And some traditional leaders and farmers in Solwezi’s Kambeu and Kyafukuma areas have appealed to FQM to use the same model in Solwezi.
Sub Chief WANGABANYA of Chief KAPIJIMPANGA Chiefdom says the same model that has been used in Ndola should be used to resettle the affected people of Kambeu and Kyafukuma areas in North Western Province.
And Solwezi Mayor REMMY KALEPA said those who will pave the way for the expansion of the mine should be given dignified compensations like what was done for the farmers in Bwana Mkubwa .
Meanwhile, Kansanshi Mining Environment, Social and Governance Specialist Resettlement GOLDEN NYUNGILA said the mine is ready to compensate the affected farmers.
