
Woman Dies in Mine Collapse in Zimba District
A 41-year-old woman has died in a mine collapse in Chief Simwatachela’s area in Zimba District, Southern Province.
Southern Province Police Commanding Officer, Auxensio Daka, has confirmed and identified the deceased as Brenda Muyabi of Mulungwa village.
Mr. Daka says the incident happened at AWAN Open-Pit Mine on Tuesday, February 18, 2025.
He explained that on the day of the incident, the deceased went to the abandoned mine with her two children, aged 3 and 5, to illegally mine aquamarine stones using a hoe.
Mr. Daka says while digging, the mine wall suddenly collapsed, burying her alive. Her children rushed to a nearby village to seek help.
Villagers managed to retrieve the woman’s body.
