By Effie Mphande
President Hakainde Hichilema has appealed to contractors in Egypt to help Zambia mobilize more capital for public infrastructure development.
President Hichilema was speaking in Cairo, Egypt, when he met with the Arab Contractors, a state-owned Egyptian company.
The President said the government wants to see international contractors subcontract some of their work to help build capacity among Zambian contractors.
He also said the government intends to improve food security surplus not just for the country but for the region.
President Hichilema explained that the country cannot have irrigation agriculture without proper water harvesting and water management.
He said the government is keen to build dams for power generation, irrigation, agriculture, and human consumption.
And Infrastructure, Housing, and Urban Development Minister Charles Milupi said there is a need to link Zambezi East with Zambezi West.
Meanwhile, the Arab Contractors Vice Chairman Heba Ahmed Abo El Ella said Tanzania’s hydro power plant, which the company is constructing, is 99.6 percent complete.
