Construction of Kamphemba Bridge Nears Completion in Chama District
Construction of the 125 million Kwacha Kamphemba Bridge in Chama District, connecting Eastern to Muchinga Province via the Chama-Matumbo road, is nearing completion.
Kiran and Musonda Associates Consulting Engineers’ Resident Engineer, Ailola Maimbolwa, says the works are at 86 percent completion.
Mr. Maimbolwa says the project, which started in 2015, was initially supposed to take 14 months but stalled due to contractual challenges.
In an interview with ZNBC News in Chama District, Mr. Maimbolwa said the works so far include the reinforced wall concrete deck and supporting concrete beams, among others.
He says the team is currently working on a relief culvert a few meters from the bridge to protect the embankment from water flowing in the catchment area.
Chama Town Council Assistant Director of Engineering, Mofwe Kaonga, says the completion of the bridge will enhance project monitoring for the local authority.
Mr. Kaonga says in past years, the Kamphemba stream would get flooded, cutting connectivity between the two provinces via the Chama-Matumbo Road.
He says this meant that people needed to travel more than 1,500 kilometres via Lusaka to get to Muchinga or Eastern Province.
