Chama District Doubles Rice Production Output
By Masauso Mkwayaya
Chama District has increased rice production from 2,000 metric tonnes in the 2022-2023 farming season to more than 4,000 metric tonnes last season.
District Senior Agriculture Officer MARY MUNSHYA says Chama currently has 4,974 rice farmers cultivating about 2,375 hectares.
In an interview with ZNBC News in Chama District, Ms. MUNSHYA said the increased production is partly attributed to Government support to the farmers through extension services.
And MOSTON GOMA, a rice farmer, has called on Government to come up with an innovative way to assist with weeding of rice fields.
Mr. GOMA said rice usually has a lot of weeds that have to be removed manually.
He said the exercise is labour-intensive and affects productivity.
