
HH Calls for Support For Proposed Constitutional Amendments

President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA has called on stakeholders to support the proposed constitutional amendments to include legislation on proportional representation in the National Assembly.
President HICHLEMA says this will ensure that women have more representation in the house.
He has urged the Church, Civil Society Organisations and other interest groups to join hands and ensure consensus is built regarding constitutional amendments.
The President made these remarks when he graced the International Women’s Day celebrations in Kasama, that was celebrated under the theme “For all women and girls, Rights, Equality, Empowerment.”
And Mr. HICHILEMA said he will prioritise the appointment of more women to decision-making positions.
He said Government has made progress in empowering women in various sectors as seen in recent recruitments in the security wings, health and education sectors.
President HICHILEMA said thousands of women have recently been recruited showcasing government’s resolve to enhance their welfare.
He said government has also put in place the free education policy to ensure that every girl child is in School.
And The President is however concerned with the abandonment of the boy child who is being left behind in most initiatives.
He said this has resulted in a high number of criminals being seen in communities.
President HICHILEMA has urged parents and guardians to see that the boy child is equally taken care of and made priority..
And, United Nations Resident Coordinator BEATRICE MUTALI has commended Government for its commitment in putting an end to Gender based violence – GBV – through the introduction and participation in gender programmes.
And , Non-Governmental Gender Organizations Coordinating Council Chairperson BEAUTY KATEBE called for the full implementation of the Anti Gender Based ACT and the construction of safe houses in all districts.
Ms. KATEBE further called for 50-50 percent adoption of political party representatives and involvement of more women in decision-making positions by 2026.
