By Fortune Sinyangwe
Water Development Minister Collins Nzovu has disclosed that about 15 million Kwacha has so far been invested in immediate response efforts towards addressing the pollution of Water bodies on the Copperbelt.
Mr. Nzovu says among the efforts includes lime treatment, alternative water supply, compensation of affected communities and logistical support from the Zambia Air Force.
Mr Nzovu was speaking during an Indaba held in Kitwe on the Pollution of Water bodies on the Copperbelt Province.
He further added that Government will constitute a team of experts that will be tasked with carrying out an audit of the structural integrity of all tailing dams and leach plants in mining companies.
Mr Nzovu said failure to act swiftly and decisively will not only further endanger the ecosystems but also undermine Zambia’s commitment to environmental sustainability and climate resilience.
Water Development Permanent Secretary, Romas Kamanga has further disclosed that about 250 million Kwacha will be required to implement all measures in addressing the crisis.
