Police Deny Tonse Alliance Protest Request
By Rosemary Kamanga
The Zambia Police Service has turned down Tonse Alliance’s request for clearance for the planned nationwide protests against the proposed constitution amendments.
The Police have cited significant concerns about public order, safety and security.
Police Spokesperson RAE HAMOONGA says the protests, scheduled for March 19, 2025, pose a serious risk of being infiltrated by criminal elements, which could lead to traffic and economic disruptions, as well as legal consequences.
Mr. HAMOONGA has further revealed that intelligence reports indicate a high likelihood of violence, disruptions to business activities, and threats to public safety.
He has since urged the leadership of the Tonse Alliance and Patriots for Economic Progress –PeP- to consider alternative, lawful ways of expressing their grievances, such as engaging in structured dialogue with relevant authorities.
Mr. HAMOONGA has emphasized that the police will take firm action against any individuals or groups which will proceed with illegal demonstrations.
He has urged citizens to remain law-abiding and avoid participating in unlawful activities.
