Government Distributes Relief Packs to Drought and Flood Victims in Lusaka
By Cecilia Zgambo-
Over seventy residents of Lusaka District affected by drought and floods have received relief packs from the government.
Lusaka District Commissioner Rosa Zulu stated that the number could have been higher had some flood-affected residents not left their homes, making it difficult for the government to trace them.
Ms. Zulu emphasized that all constituencies in the district were covered, with special attention given to Kanyama Constituency.
She noted that the government has also introduced programs such as Cash for Work, which helps ease the burden on affected residents by enabling them to meet their basic needs.
Ms. Zulu made these remarks while officiating at the Muslim Social and Welfare Trust’s food hamper distribution in Kanyama Compound.
She expressed gratitude to the Muslim community for their continued efforts in improving the lives of vulnerable people in society.
Meanwhile, Muslim Social and Welfare Trust Coordinator Mubasshir Mehta stated that the 150,000 Kwacha donation is a way of upholding Kenneth Kaunda’s legacy, as he pioneered charitable efforts to support the vulnerable.
He highlighted that Dr. Kaunda not only fought for the people of Zambia but also for many other African nations.
Mr. Mehta further revealed that the organization aims to assist over 2,000 vulnerable households in the area.
Additionally, beneficiary Margaret Chishimba expressed appreciation, stating that the mealie meal, rice, and cooking oil she received would go a long way in supporting her family, as she cares for orphans.
