Samfya Man fined K80,000 for aiding an illegal immigrant
A 24 year old Zambian of Samfya district has been convicted and fined for aiding and abetting a Congolese.
PASCAL CHAMA was fine 80,000 Kwacha or 12 months simple imprisonment.
CHAMA was apprehended on June 19, 2024 for assisting Mr. YUMBA KYABUTAKOU, an undocumented Congolese national to sell a motor bike and conduct traditional healing practices by offering him interpretation services.
Immigration Department Spokesperson NAMATI NSHINKA says the duo was found at a house belonging to Friday BWALYA following a tip-off from a concerned member of the public.
Mr NSHINKA says the court also convicted and fined the Congolese 15,000 Kwacha or 12 months simple imprisonment for conducting business without a permit.
And Mr NSHINKA says Friday BWALYA has also been arrested and charged with harbouring.
He has told ZNBC News in a statement that BWALYA’s case will come up for continuation of trial on July 15, 2024, while the motor bike has also been forfeited to the state.
Meanwhile, the Luanshya Immigration Office has secured the conviction of a 47-year- old Russian of Lusaka’s Foxdale for unlawful stay in Zambia for over three years.
ALEKSANDR MAZUROV was fined 25,000 Kwacha or nine months simple imprisonment.
He was apprehended on June 21, 2024 by Immigration Officers at Fisenge Checkpoint in a hired Lusaka-bound Toyota Allion after he failed to produce proof of legal immigration status in Zambia.
Mr NSHINKA says investigations revealed that MAZUROV once held an Employment Permit under Leocor Zambia Limited as a Geologist which expired on May 19, 2018.
He later applied for a Spouse Permit in 2020 which was rejected on 1st June 2021 after which he stayed in the country unlawfully until the date of his arrest.
He has since paid the court fine and will soon be removed from the country.
Meanwhile, the Kafue Immigration Office has secured the convictions of sixteen
illegal immigrants for various immigration offences.
Five Zimbabweans, two Tanzanians, One Congolese and One Ugandan were convicted for illegal entry and were fined of between 4,000 and 5,000 Kwacha or seven months simple imprisonment.
And, Mr NSHINKA says the Samfya, Luanshya and Kafue court outcomes brings the number of convictions secured by the Department between June 28 and July 4, 2024 to 47.
He says that during the period the Department apprehended 204 persons for various immigration offences and removed 75 illegal immigrants
