Government has approved a three point one billion kwacha drought resource plan to respond to the current water shortages in most parts of the country.
Water Development and Sanitation Minister COLLINS NZOVU says a number of projects are being undertaken by various water utility companies to build resilient water supply systems.
Mr. NZOVU says among the projects under the drought response plan is the construction and rehabilitation of dams and the rehabilitation and equipping of non-functional boreholes.
He says his ministry is also drilling both domestic and commercial boreholes and equipping them with solar pumps.
Speaking during a press briefing in Lusaka today, Mr. NZOVU stressed that government will also ensure that there is dedicated power supply to the water sector.
He said the ministry will also procure Generators and water meters to improve conservation of water and deal with non-revenue water.
Mr. NZOVU said the drought resource plan also includes the construction of animal drinking troughs and construction of sanitation facilities.
He has since called for concerted efforts from stakeholders as government embarks on water conservation to ensure the country has adequate and sustainable water supply.
