Lawyers told to consider mediation before courts
By Hannock Kasama
Chief Justice MUMBA MALILA has called on lawyers to play a part in the actualization of alternative dispute resolutions such as mediation.
Dr. MALILA says with legal expertise, lawyers stand to be instrumental in settlement of some cases that cannot be necessarily subjected to litigation.
Meanwhile Dr. MALILA says strategic communication system is key for the judiciary to defend its image in the eye of the public.
He says this is not withstanding that judges due to their ethical standards cannot directly defend themselves against unwarranted attacks.
Dr. MALILA said this in LUSAKA today during the launch of the 2024 Mediation Settlement week.
Meanwhile, Chairperson of the Advisory Committee on Court Annexed Mediation Justice, ABHA PATEL said mediation is critical to quick delivery of justice due to limited judicial infrastructure and administrative challenges.
Judiciary’s Public Relations Advisory Committee Chairperson Justice KELVIN MUZENGA acknowledged that court annexed mediation is critical to reduce the backlog of cases before the judiciary usually subjected to routine litigation .
