UNHRC report on Zambia is flawed – MWEETWA
By Wilson Mulinda
Government has expressed concern and disappointment regarding inaccuracies and misrepresentations contained in the United Nations Special Rapporteurs of the Human Rights Council report on fundamental freedoms in Zambia.
Chief Government Spokesperson CORNELIUS MWEETWA says the assertion that members of the clergy have been arrested under the UPND administration is not only misleading but also alarming, especially coming from a body such as the UNHRC.
Mr. MWEETWA says Government has no record of any such arrests, and is perplexed as to the source of the erroneous information.
In a statement issued to ZNBC News today, Mr. MWEETWA said Zambia has always upheld the freedom of religion and expression.
Mr. MWEETWA said the claim that State Actors have instrumentalised legal provisions to suppress the legitimate exercise of freedom of expression is unfounded.
He said the Zambia Police Service, under the current administration, has been mandated to safeguard the peace and security of the country.
Mr. MWEETWA said government has also been clear in condemning any excesses by law enforcement officers.
He said it is also important to address the report’s suggestion that there is no democratic space left for the opposition in Zambia, adding that Government has made significant strides in upholding and protecting the democratic values of the country.
Mr. MWEETWA said the UPND administration initiated a consultative process for the review and possible repeal of the Public Order Act, a move that underscores commitment to enhancing democratic governance and expanding the democratic space for all Zambians.
He said Government will engage the UNHRC to reaffirm its commitment in upholding and protecting human rights and ensuring that all citizens enjoy their rights and freedoms in a safe and democratic environment.
