The Basic Education Teachers Union of Zambia (BETUZ) has handed over thirty plots to its unionized members in Lufwanyama District to help address accommodation challenges.
BETUZ General Secretary, Henry Sinkala, says the move is aimed at empowering and supplementing the government’s efforts in ensuring teachers have decent accommodation.
Speaking during the handover of offer letters to its members in Lufwanyama District on the Copperbelt, Mr. Sinkala said the union will embark on a project of building 60,000 houses for members.
Lufwanyama DEBS, Silvester Mukanda, said the initiative by BETUZ is the first of its kind and will ensure teachers stop commuting and absconding from work.
Meanwhile, Lufwanyama Council Chairperson, Annie Kapandula, urged the teachers not to sell the plots.
Lufwanyama District Commissioner, Justin Mwalikwa, said the government is also working to ensure more decent houses are built for teachers.
