Chief CHAMUKA of Central Province has called on the Zambia Agriculture Research Institute -ZARI – to set up demo plots for indigenous seeds in Chiefdoms.
The Chief says this will help preserve indigenous varieties that are becoming scarce.
Chief CHAMUKA says it is important to preserve traditional seeds to promote food security and protect Zambia’s cultural heritage.
The traditional leader who is also Vice Chairperson of House of Chiefs says several farmers are losing traditional seed varieties.
Chief CHAMUKA says unlike hybrid seeds, traditional varieties naturally adapt to ecosystems, climate and soil conditions.
He said this during the Zambia Traditional Seed and Food Festival held in Chilanga District.
And Chilanga Member of Parliament SIPHO HLAZO encouraged farmers to start preparing their fields in readiness for the planting season.
