Chipata hires contractor to collect waste from markets
By Christopher Miti
Chipata City Council has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Good Nature Agro to collect solid waste at the Saturday market including other markets in the city.
The Saturday market was temporarily closed last month following a Cholera outbreak.
Speaking during the signing ceremony, Chipata City Mayor GEORGE MWANZA said the agreement will improve hygiene standards in markets.
Mr MWANZA says 500,000 Kwacha from the council’s 2.5 million Kwacha annual budget will be spent on solid waste management.
And Good Nature Agro co-founder Sunday SILUNGWE says the company will also donate a 5,000 litre tank and some cleaning materials to the council.
Meanwhile, Kanjala Ward Councillor MOSES MBUZI has appealed to other stakeholders to emulate Good Nature Agro and partner with the local authority.
