Chipata woman dies after falling into a pit latrine

A 45-year-old woman of Mchini Compound in Chipata District has died after falling into a pit latrine.
FLATA TEMBO fell into a pit latrine between 21:00 and 22:00 hours on Friday when she went to answer the call of nature.
Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer ROBERTSON MWEEMBA says the incident occurred when the ground of the latrine collapsed.
Mr. MWEEMBA says efforts by her husband YUSUF PHIRI to save the deceased proved futile.
He says the deceased is suspected to have died of suffocation after inhaling hazardous gases.
Mr. MWEEMBA says the body was retrieved by a team of fire brigade and police officers.
He says the body was deposited to Chipata Central hospital mortuary awaiting burial.
