CHIZOMBE makes submissions in ECL case

LUSAKA businessman MICHELO CHIZOMBE says he has raised new issues that have not been determined by the Constitutional Court on the eligibility of former President EDGAR LUNGU to contest the 2021 general election and future ones.
In his written submissions filed in the Constitutional Court registry, Mr. CHIZOMBE has contended that the Constitutional Court did not pronounce itself on the effect of Mr. LUNGU’s first term pursuant to article 35 of the 1991 constitution.
He has also submitted that he has had no opportunity to raise any of the matters pertaining to Mr. LUNGU’s eligibility before the Constitutional Court.
This is in a matter where Mr. CHIZOMBE has sought the Constitutional Court’s determination on whether or not the Former President was eligible to contest the 2021 General Election and his eligibility for future elections.
The matter is pending hearing following the dismissal of Mr. LUNGU’s preliminary issue in which he attempted to block the case by arguing that the court had already dealt with it in the DANNY PULE case of 2017.
But the court ruled that Mr. CHIZOMBE’s new case on Mr. LUNGU’s eligibility had raised new issues that needed to be fully determined.
