The Zambia Correctional Service is expected to harvest 17,200 50-kilogram bags of maize in Eastern Province this year.
This is from the 215 hectares of land under cultivation in the province.
The service has also ventured into other cash crops such as sunflower.
Zambia Correctional Service Eastern Regional Commander, Oliver Liseba, said the crops are coming up very well.
Ministry of Home Affairs Principal Public Relations Officer, Mwala Kalaluka, said the Correctional Service has proved to be one of the major sectors contributing to national food security.
Mr. Kalaluka was speaking when he toured the Correctional Service farm at the Chipata Central facility.
He also toured the holding cells to check on the bunker beds and beddings.
Mr. Kalaluka commended the members of staff at the facility for their dedication and hard work.
He said the government is determined to improve the conditions in all correctional facilities in the country.
Mr. Kalaluka also toured three palaces that are being constructed by the Correctional Service in Eastern Province.
