
Court Sets April 29 Ruling on ‘Jay Jay’ Banda Escape Case

The Chipata Magistrate Court has set April 29, 2025 for ruling in the case in which some #police and correctional services officers are accused of helping former Petauke Member of Parliament, EMMANUEL #JAY BANDA, to escape.
In this matter, three Correctional Service Officers, two Police Officers and Mr. BANDA’s wife, LOMBE CHALI, are jointly charged with one count of aiding Mr. BANDA to escape from lawful custody on August 4, 2024.
The correctional services officers are NATHAN MBAO, MUSA ZULU and MOSES SAKALA, while the police officers are PHINEAS MFUNGWE and BENSON KABOLE.
Chipata Principal Resident Magistrate, BONIFACE MWALA set the date for ruling after Deputy Chief Advocate, RICHARD MASEMPELA closed the case for the State.
Mr. MASEMPELA told the court that the state will file written submissions on Monday, April 7, 2025, while the defence will also file their written submissions a week later.
