
“Cyber Law Meant to Bring Sanity in the Cyber Space”
Information and Media Permanent Secretary THABO KAWANA says the recently signed Cyber Law is not aimed at infringing on citizens’ freedom of expression.
Mr. KAWANA says the law is also not meant to impede on the operations of the media fraternity.
He says the cyber laws are instead going to bring about sanity in the cyber space and ensure that those behind scandalizing others are brought to book .
Mr KAWANA says citizens should not be misled as the laws will not affect anyone using the cyber space responsibly.
He said this when the World Press Freedom Day Organising Committee paid a courtesy call on him at his office.
He has also called on the media to use Artificial intelligence to propel their work .
And Organising Committee Chairperson BRIGHTON PHIRI called on the ministry to officiate at this year’s world Press Freedom Day slated for 3rd May under the theme , “Reporting in the Brave New World: The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media.”
Mr PHIRI says the event will be commemorated in various parts of the country , with Lusaka hosting the main celebration.
He said the commemoration will start with a match past and culminate into speeches .
Speaking also during the courtesy call , Organising Committee Member JOY CHULA said it is important for media houses to use Artificial Intelligence to better their reporting .
