ECZ desires time efficient elections
By Joy Nyambe
The Electoral Commission of Zambia -ECZ- says it desires to see elections held successfully within the stipulated time frame and scheduled dates.
ECZ Chairperson MWANGALA ZALOUMIS says factors such as resignation or withdrawal of a candidate after the nomination process should not occur.
Ms. ZALOUMIS says such conduct is not only a drawback to the Commission and other stakeholders, but also a waste of resources and disruption in the electoral process.
She says such undesirable and disruptive conduct will not deter the Commission from proceeding with an election.
Ms. ZALOUMIS was speaking in Petauke today when she officially opened the Political Party Liaison Committee meeting.
This is in preparation for the filing in of nominations on Tuesday, January 7, 2025 and voting on Thursday, February 6, 2025 in the Petauke central Parliamentary by-election.
Ms. ZALOUMIS appealed to all political parties and those aspiring to take part in Tuesday’s nominations to take the advice seriously.
She also urged political parties intending to take part in the by-election to co-exist despite holding divergent views.
Among the political parties who attended the meeting included representatives from the UPND, MMD, Socialist Party, Leadership Movement and FDD.
Others are New Congress Party, Democratic Union, Democratic National Party and Citizens First.
The Petauke central Parliamentary by-election has been necessitated by the absence from the sitting of the House from 4th August, 2024 by the incumbent MP, EMMANUEL BANDA.
