Govt calls for Full Utilization of Irrigation Schemes to Boost Agricultural Productivity
(NAIS) Secretary to the Cabinet, Patrick Kangwa, has called for 100 percent utilization of irrigation schemes across the country to boost agricultural productivity.
Mr. Kangwa stated that the government has revamped and established several dams through irrigation schemes, which farmers should quickly take advantage of to increase production.
He noted that, with issues of climate change, there is a need to ensure that farmers produce all year round to improve the country’s food basket.
Mr. Kangwa emphasized the need for more Zambians to engage in farming, even as little as a lima or hectare, to enhance household food and nutrition security.
Speaking during his tour of the Mwomboshi irrigation scheme in Chisamba district, Mr. Kangwa explained that there is a need for a mindset change among public service workers to realize the country’s development agenda.
Central Province Permanent Secretary, Milner Mwanakampwe, applauded the Defence Force for taking a leading role in enhancing maize production in the country.
Meanwhile, the Zambia Correctional Service (ZCS) has cultivated more than 500 hectares of maize at its Mwomboshi farms in Chisamba district, Central Province.
