Govt has made reducing the high cost of living a top priority-Nalumango
By Ruth Chayinda
Vice President Mutale Nalumango has assured Zambians that the government has made reducing the high cost of living a top priority.
Mrs. Nalumango, who acknowledged the rising cost of living, noted that it is not just a Zambian issue, but a global challenge.
The Vice President says the government is committed to empowering citizens through initiatives such as enhanced social cash transfers, grants, loans under the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), and creating jobs.
She says increasing employment opportunities will enable more Zambians to afford goods and services.
Mrs. Nalumango was responding to a question from Bweengwa Member of Parliament, Kasauta Michelo, who had inquired about the government’s strategies to reduce the cost of living during the Vice President’s Question Time.
She highlighted that the government has created a conducive environment for investment across various sectors, which she believes will contribute to lowering living costs.
Mrs. Nalumango also stressed that the government’s decision to restructure national debt has freed up resources that can now be reinvested in key economic and social sectors.
She explained that without the debt restructuring, the government would have been forced to allocate the majority of the national budget to servicing the debt and paying civil servant wages.
