“Govt is committed to improving the welfare of students”
By Ruth Chayinda
President Hakainde Hichilema says the resumption of the construction of the 26 hostels at UNZA is a demonstration of government’s commitment to improving the quality of education in the country.
President Hichilema says he is aware that the construction of the hostels had stalled for a decade, but due to Governments love and support for improving the welfare of student construction works have resumed.
He says his government has a duty to improve the living conditions of student at UNZA and will continue to ensure that it is actualized.
President Hichilema said this when he addressed students at the University of Zambia main campus.
The President said now that Government has restored the rule of law and restructured debt, it can now respond to some of the other needs in the country such as the accommodation for students.
And UNZASU President Dickson Mutambo praised President Hichilema for his commitment to supporting the education sector.
Mr. Mutambo said this can be seen through the increase in the number of students accessing bursary, meal allowance among others.
And speaking earlier during the tour of hostels at UNZA main campus, Ministry of Education Head of infrastructure Lweendo Habbanti said the construction hostels at UNZA have resumed after they stalled for over 10 years.
Mr. Habbanti said the project will see the completion of 26 hostels of which, 22 are at the main campus while 4 are at the Ridgeway.
