Government says it will continue with the feeding programme in 2025 in the event that drought continues.
Minister of Finance and National Planning, Situmbeko Musokotwane, says the government will also continue with other social protection programmes such as cash for work and social cash transfer.
Dr. Musokotwane says a number of measures have been put in place to ensure that the economy is on the path of recovery from shocks of drought in the energy sector.
The Finance Minister says an enabling environment has been created for the private sector to buy electricity from other countries and invest in alternative sources of energy aimed at addressing the energy crisis faced in 2024.
He was responding to Economics Association of Zambia (EAZ) President, Osward Mungule, who observed that the country had experienced a low GDP in 2024 and that there had been low collection of taxes among other challenges that the government faced in 2024.
This was during the end-of-year Gala Dinner organised by the EAZ in Lusaka, under the theme ‘Revitalising Zambia’s Economy, Building Resilience and Embracing Opportunities for Sustainable Growth.’
EAZ President, Dr. Osward Mungule, praised the government for embarking on debt restructuring and putting in place good investment policies.
Meanwhile, Centre for Trade, Policy Development (CTPD) Executive Director, Isaac Mwaipopo, said all stakeholders have the potential to transform the challenges that the country faced in 2024 into positive strides.
