By Mwila Nsofu
The National Heart Hospital has conducted SEVEN Pediatric cardiac operations under its third Cardiac Camp.
The operations have been made possible with support from Italy’s Mission Bambini Team which has collaborated with Zambian Doctors at the Hospital.
The third Cardiac Camp started on March 24th and ended on Friday March 28, 2025.
National Heart Hospital Senior Medical Superintendent CHABWELA SHUMBA says the camp has successfully equipped National Heart Hospital staff with techniques for repairing patients with heart conditions such as Tetralogy of Fallot.
Tetralogy of Fallot is a condition that causes children to appear blue due to insufficient blood flow to the lungs and requires four procedures during surgery.
Dr. SHUMBA also highlighted that Mission Bambini has facilitated the acquisition of super-specialist skills for three members of the National Heart Hospital in cardiac anesthesia, pediatric cardiac intensive care, and pediatric cardiology.
Mission Bambini Team Lead, STEPHAN MARIANESCH, expressed happiness to continue the mission and collaborate with the local doctors, who have been praised for their excellent skills.
Dr. MARIANESCH also said the team looks forward to further collaborations between Mission Bambini and the National Heart Hospital in the future.
