President Hakainde Hichilema has attended the virtual Extraordinary Organ Troika Summit of SADC Heads of State and Government.
President Hichilema engaged with other leaders in a closed session to discuss the post-election political and security situation in Mozambique.
Speaking to journalists after the virtual summit, Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister Mulambo Haimbe said President Hichilema’s participation underscores Zambia’s commitment to promoting collective efforts for regional stability and shared aspirations.
Mr. Haimbe said the summit proposed several interventions aimed at normalizing the situation in Mozambique.
He noted that Mozambique holds strategic importance as a trade hub in the region.
Mr. Haimbe expressed optimism that the proposed measures would address the ongoing challenges in Mozambique.
The summit, chaired by Tanzanian President and Chair of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence, and Security Cooperation, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, expressed deep concern over the violence and destruction of property in Mozambique.
Dr. Suluhu Hassan stated that SADC cannot ignore the situation in Mozambique, which has claimed innocent lives.
She mentioned that the unrest has disrupted social and economic stability, hindering trade and the transport of goods and services.
She added that SADC has a duty to stand with the people of Mozambique, who rely on the bloc during such critical times.
SADC Executive Secretary Elias Magosi said several interventions have been employed to de-escalate the crisis.
Mr. Magosi urged all parties involved to exercise extreme restraint.
He emphasized SADC’s commitment to unity and regional cooperation, pledging continued support for Mozambique.
Mr. Magosi also commended regional leaders for their efforts to help Mozambique return to normalcy.
The summit was attended by leaders from Zambia, Tanzania, and Malawi.
