President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA has called on his Burundian counterpart EVERISTE NDAYISHIMIYE who is incoming COMESA Authority Chairperson to accelerate economic integration.
President HICHILEMA says this will improve intra COMESA trade.
He says COMESA trade currently stands between 11 to 12 percent adding that Africa trades less with itself, a situation that is unacceptable.
President HICHILEMA says COMESA member states should promote the corridor approach to address regional infrastructure gaps.
He says the concept of promoting corridors is effective to accelerating regional integration.
President HICHILEMA has also stressed the need for COMESA to combat non tariff barriers.
He was speaking at the 23rd COMESA Summit for Heads of State and government in Burundi where he handed over the instruments of power as COMESA Chairperson to President NDAYISHIMIYE who takes over as Chairperson.
And in his acceptable speech President NDAYISHIMIYE paid tribute to President HICHILEMA for his leadership in fostering peace in the COMESA Region.
President NDAYISHIMIYE also commended CONGO DR for the effort it is making to restoring peace in that country.
